Lando Norris isn't going anywhere anytime soon. McLaren's reigning world champion has locked in his future with the Woking-based team through the end of the decade, a move that comes with more than just the usual contract talk. The announcement has sparked plenty of buzz across the paddock. 

On August 29th, Norris announced his contract extension with the Woking-based team until 2030. He broke the news to McLaren employees at a friends-and-family day at the McLaren HQ. 

The exact financial terms of the new deal haven't been disclosed, but reports suggest Norris' earn around $69.6 million a year, making him the third-highest-paid driver on the grid . While talking to the media, Norris spoke about how staying with the team felt like the right thing to do. 

"At the minute there's really no reason to want to even put a thought into somewhere else," Norris told the press, as reported by First Post on their website. "I kind of want my whole career to be with McLaren because I'm happy here and I don't want to change."

Norris first joined McLaren as their developmental driver back in 2017 and made his Formula One debut with the team in 2019. He has now won 13 Grand Prix races as well as helped the team become World Constructors' champions for two years in a row. In 2025, Norris became the first world champion for McLaren since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. 

He further spoke about how he does not mind becoming one of the 'one team drivers' if given a chance to do so. 

"I want to fight with McLaren even when things are not going well, and I want to win with McLaren when things are going amazingly well. So yeah, I'll be very, very happy at the end of my career to say that McLaren was the only team I've been with."

For Norris, this deal isn't just about the years on paper. It's a statement of where he belongs, and by his own admission, exactly where he wants to be when his career eventually comes to an end. 

McLaren team principal reacts to Lando Norris' contract extension

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella weighed in on the news. He reflected on Lando Norris' journey with the team from being a developmental driver to a World Champion. 

While speaking to Speedweek, Stella praised Norris' commitment to the team.  

"Lando has been an integral part of McLaren’s development and success for nine years, and we are delighted to continue our partnership with him until at least 2030," Stella said during the interview with Speedweek. 

Stella also spoke about what sets Norris apart beyond his results on track. 

"He is an exceptional driver who combines exceptional pace with maturity, consistency and great commitment to McLaren, but above all he is a special person who is valued by everyone in the team."

With Norris and the team's leadership all echoing the same message, this extension looks like more than just years on paper. It's a shared belief in what McLaren can still achieve together.
