Bubba Wallace Urged to Follow Dale Earnhardt's Footprints After Martinsville Shocker
Bubba Wallace had another disappointing race as he finished Martinsville in 36th place. It happened due to his incident with Carson Hocevar. After a solid start to the year, Wallace has had two poor finishes, and a former NASCAR driver has asked him to follow the late great Dale Earnhardt if he wants to regain his lost form.
Earnhardt, who won seven Cup Series titles, was known as one of the smartest drivers. Rick Mast, on a recent episode of his 'Mast Cast' podcast, revealed the lessons Wallace could take from Earnhardt.
“One of the best that was Earnhardt Sr. I mean, he was one of the best cerebral, you know, smart," said Mast when talking about NASCAR drivers needing to also be smart.
Mast, who is a former driver, wanted Wallace to be composed in races, as under the new Chase Format, it was important to finish races.
"The way the points are structured, now you know you can't worry about winning a race again and getting in, you got to worry about finishing the race.....it's just a matter of getting his mind right.”
Martinsville has been known as a pressure cooker due to the tense environment and growing impatience that it creates. Mast also acknowledged it and explained how looking back on these mistakes can help improve.
Kevin Harvick reacts to Bubba Wallace's outburst at Martinsville
Kevin Harvick was another former driver who chimed in with a take on . The Bubba Wallace incident.
The one-time Cup Series winner acknowledged the difficulty of racing in Martinsville, but pointed out Wallace's mistake during the race.
“Bubba got riled up because Carson put him three wide on a restart and put him in a bad spot, and Bubba didn’t like that," said Wallace on his podcast. "I’ve lost my temper a bunch of times at Martinsville and probably done stuff like this too.”
Having started the season with four top 10 finishes, Wallace's form has dipped in the last two races. This has cost him to drop in the standings to 11th place.
"It wasn’t long ago we were talking about Bubba and Tyler being one, two in the points. Bubba’s 11th in the points," said Harvick.
With a point system where every point matters, Bubba Wallace cannot afford to lose his cool and cause a setback to himself and the team.
A week off certainly has come in at a good time for Wallace, as he will be hoping to reflect on the last two races and improve when NASCAR heads to Bristol next Sunday.
