For some time now, Corey Heim has been hailed as NASCAR’s brightest prospect, and on Sunday, he proved why. With an emphatic victory at the inaugural San Diego race, the 23XI Racing driver floored the paddock, earning his first Cup win in his 13th start.

With two laps to go, Heim overtook teammate and championship leader Tyler Reddick, who then suffered a flat tire and fell to 25th. Heim finished the race 10.365 seconds ahead of teammate Bubba Wallace in second, contributing to the team's first 1-2 in organization history.

On the final lap of the Anduril 250, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was commentating, called Corey Heim a "generational talent" and a "superstar." Moreover, the 23c-year-old himself couldn't believe what he had done as a part-timer in the series.

While talking to former Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne for Prime Video after the race, the No. 67 driver expressed his feelings, saying: 

“I’m speechless. We started 13th, we fell straight back to like 20th, then put on our scuffs from qualifying and struggled just as bad. I don’t know if we made any adjustments, but Woody kept telling me that these were our worst two sets of tires. We’re gonna be just fine, and he was right. I couldn’t believe that we strapped another set of tires on."

He further spoke about how coming to a new track put everyone on an equal footing and gave a rookie like him a chance to battle for a win. 

"We were just fine, hit the wall a couple times, maybe it knocked some good into the car. I have no idea," Heim added. "After Stage 2, I just kind of took a deep breath and was like, I had really high expectations coming into this race. It’s an even playing field for me. I don’t see that every day for a young driver like myself, and I just kind of took a deep breath and reset and went after it."

For Heim, this marks his maiden win with the team before entering the series full-time in 2027. With this win, the 23XI driver also joined the likes of Shane Van Gisbergen, Austin Cindric, Justin Haley, Trevor Bayne, and a few more to get their first win in 13 or fewer starts in the Cup Series.

Why Denny Hamlin felt Corey Heim was a "generational talent"

At the end of May, 23XI Racing announced that Corey Heim would be promoted from a part-timer to a full-time driver in 2027. The defending Truck Series champion would replace Riley Herbst as the team's third driver.

Heim has been building his reputation race by race, and in 94 Truck Series starts, he has 26 wins. After his signing, while addressing the media, 23XI co-owner Denny Hamlin showered praise on Heim, saying:

"Generational drivers only come by every now and then. I firmly believe we have one here," said Hamlin. "Really excited about what he's going to bring our team and the performance that he's going to bring. Looking forward to working with him in the future." 

For Corey Heim, the maiden win at San Diego was not just a win but rather a statement in a career that continues to gain momentum. If Hamlin’s prediction last month seemed bold, it is performances like these that make it seem justified.
