Jimmie Johnson and everyone at Legacy Motor Club will look at the performance by their drivers in Pocono and feel like things are finally starting to align. 

It was a major milestone for the team as for the first time in history, LMC ended a race with both cars in the top 10. Erik Jones ended in 6th place, and John Hunter Nemechek drove the 42 Toyota to his joint best Cup Series finish of 4th. 

JHN was exhilarated after the race and spoke about the strategy calls his team made, saying it was about the team coming good when it mattered. 

Speaking to journalists after the race, the 42 driver said, “Really solid day, really proud of the effort, really stoked to finish 4th and lead as many laps as we did and run up front all day. And it’s not just a fluke on strategy where we front 4th. It feels really good. We’re building potential both in the  42 and 43 and across the whole organization. 

JHN entered the race in Pocono with a career best of 20 laps led in a race and set a new career best by leading 42 laps in the 42 LMC Toyota. Team owner Jimmie Johnson, who was in France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, congratulated his team on X. 

JHN also felt like he had a car that could have possibly gone on to win the race, he felt the potential in the car and revealed the confidence he felt. 

“I felt like if we could get the clean air, maybe, and it was gonna be between 11 and I who got the clean air on one of those or on the final restart. The strategy we had to take more fuel than the 11 did… Ultimately, that’s how the 24 jumped us, was just we were on a different strategy than they were.”

Meanwhile, Jones, while speaking after the race, mentioned how it was a simple clean day with nothing spectacular but a good result. "Happy with the speed. Just hope we can keep it going," he said.

Hunter Nemecheck Puts Pocono Drive Amongst Best Cup Performances

JHN entered Pocono with the monkey on his shoulder that his race would have been different in Michigan if he hadn’t been tapped by Hocevar; he may have had a better finish than 14th. 

But the 42 driver is now confident of the car he is driving and revealed that the 4th place finish is amongst the best races in his time in the Cup series.

“It definitely ranks up there. I feel like I’ve had a couple other ones that have been pretty good. Darlingnton last fall stood out…But today was probably one of the best days I’ve had in the Cup series as a driver. And just continue to build that confidence, continue to build the momentum and the potential that we have in our cars are symmetrical.”

LMC, who are an independent team and doesn’t get the information and facilities that the likes of other dependent teams get, is on a path of building its own blueprint. The idea is to get a third car in the near future, and the signs shown by the 42 and 43 car are signs of them being on the correct path. 

JHN said, “Felt like we had the most potential I got in one of our cars for sure… proud of the efforts from everyone back home at the shop, but just pumped on our 4th place finish after the last few weeks that we’ve had with fast progress and not being able to pave the way from those results. Excited to keep the ball moving and pushing in the right direction.”

Johnson was excited heading into San Diego and it will be interesting to see if LMC can take momentum from Pocono and turn their season around.
