Dystany Spurlock has received massive support from around the NASCAR universe after her historic debut in the Truck Series at Dover. She drove the No. 69 truck for MBM Motorsports, becoming the first Black woman ever to compete in a NASCAR national series division.

Though her race result was dismal, her participation ended up inspiring many. She lasted only 36 laps after dirty air from another truck forced her to snap loose just outside Turn 2 before smashing into the wall. In her defense, fans and teams from around the grid lobbed in support, as she got hit with criticism for her performance.

This post quickly gained traction among all her supporters, who consistently felt that the driver must be given chances before such a final opinion is derived about her. She, after all, was a rookie who entered one of the most difficult NASCAR tracks with minimal preparation.

In fact, Spurlock mentioned how track conditions had changed significantly after her practice, “After our practice and qualifying, the Cup guys had their practice session, and once we got back out there the track surface was completely different.”

Spurlock’s difficult time, however, started long before the race, as her team lost a lot of practice time due to inspection penalties, while electrical problems limited her to only 16 practice laps before qualifying.

Despite such barriers, she managed to post a time of 23.721 seconds, which was faster than several experienced drivers such as Frankie Muniz, Natalie Decker, Spencer Boyd, and Caleb Costner.

Her sponsor also showed support for what this means for the sport. “History was made. Regardless of the outcome, this moment is monumental for sports, women in sports, and the continued progress of equality and diversity," said Chris Harris, co-founder of Foxxtecca.

From an unusual background to NASCAR history

Dystany Spurlock’s journey into NASCAR cannot be called traditional; it’s a whole story. Before she entered stock car racing, she worked as an attendant for Delta Airlines and even drove trucks professionally.

She didn’t have the karting or late model racing background that most NASCAR drivers have. Instead, while growing up near Richmond Raceway, she dreamed of NASCAR while watching Dale Earnhardt races with her grandfather.

With a lack of major funding, she then turned towards motorcycle racing and eventually became one of the fastest women in the XDA Motorcycle Drag Racing Series. Her career then took a major shift when she received backing from Foxxtecca to move into ARCA and then later NASCAR.

Earlier this year, she already made history once when she became the first Black woman to start in NASCAR-owned ARCA race at the Hickory Motor Speedway. She finished an impressive seventh. She again stepped up in the Kansas ARCA race and finished 10th.

For a driver with such a harsh path, she has shown commendable skill and patience. It is in the spirit of both NASCAR and America to support such homegrown talent, for after all, everyone deserves a shot at the American dream.
