Lando Norris and McLaren have been through a lot together. From his early days with the team, fighting to get to the front of the field, to being crowned the World Champion during the 2025 season, he has grown into one of the sport's biggest stars. He has recently opened up about why he wants to stay with McLaren. 

On August 29th, Norris announced his contract extension with the Woking-based team until 2030.  He broke the news to McLaren employees at a friends-and-family day at the McLaren HQ. 

After the announcement, during an interview with Formula One journalist Lawrence Barreto, the 2025  Formula One World Champion spoke about his decision to extend the contract and the possibility of staying with the team beyond 2030. 

"I want to make this my home," Norris said during the interview with Barreto, shared on Formula One's official website. "I want it to be the place that I am at for a very, very long time and maybe even forever."

Norris holds the record for the most starts for McLaren, having raced in 163 Grand Prix for the team. However, for Norris, it is not the records that keep him coming back. 

"There are more nice things that just allow me to work better here and live better here, and that's an amazing thing," the reigning world champion explained further. 

Lando Norris first joined McLaren as their developmental driver back in 2017 and made his Formula One debut with the team in 2019. He has now won 13 Grand Prix races and helped the team become World Constructors' champions for two years in a row. 

Whether or not Norris decides to stay beyond 2030 will be something only time will tell, but for now McLaren remains his home. 

Andrea Stella reacts to Lando Norris' contract extension

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella weighed in on Norris staying with the team for four more seasons. He reflected on the McLaren driver’s journey with the team from being a developmental driver to a World Champion. 

While speaking to Speedweek, Stella praised Norris' commitment to the team.  

"Lando has been an integral part of McLaren’s development and success for nine years, and we are delighted to continue our partnership with him until at least 2030."

Stella also spoke about what sets Norris apart beyond his results on track. 

"He is an exceptional driver who combines exceptional pace with maturity, consistency and great commitment to McLaren, but above all he is a special person who is valued by everyone in the team."

Stella's comments make clear just how valued Lando Norris is at the team, and for now, both sides seem happy to keep it that way.
