Ford Doomed to Fail in NASCAR as Driver Crisis Worsens in 2026
Ford's future in NASCAR just took another major hit. The crisis isn't on track, but with the next generation. Kevin Harvick's son, Keelan, has signed a long-term development deal with rival Toyota, deepening Ford's driver crisis.
NASCAR insider and journalist Bob Pockrass shared the update on X, writing, “Toyota Racing Development has signed Keelan Harvick to a long-term development deal.”
The 13-year-old will now be committed to nationwide late model races in the No. 62 Toyota Camry, backed up by partners like Rackley W.A.R and Kevin Harvick Inc., with ExxonMobil sponsoring key events in 2026.
Kevin Harvick used to embody blue oval loyalty by racing Fords at Stewart-Haas Racing in the Cup, alongside the Truck series at Tricon Garage, and his own Kevin Harvick Inc. team.
Yet, the cycle has been broken, and Keelan has bypassed that heritage for Toyota's program, which offers him cutting-edge tech support and a clearer picture and path to the national series.
This loss is just deepening the already ongoing Ford crisis after the closure of Stewart-Haas Racing and the thinning of development seats. 2025 was a tough year for the team, and they didn't have a driver in the final four.
In 2026, Ford only has a few teams like RFK, Penske, Wood Brothers, and Front Row Motorsports, but on the other hand, rivals like Toyota and Chevy are expanding.
The team at Ford remains optimistic, with Pat DiMarco saying, "Looking forward to a great '26 and more consistency across the board, which I think with the RFK cars running up front last night, Ryan Preece with the win at the Clash. I think there's some upside for '26 for the Ford Motor Company."
But what does Kevin Harvick have to say about his son Keelan breaking a cycle and joining hands with Toyota?
Kevin Harvick On His Son Joining Toyota
“We’ve concentrated a lot on development and have a theory on how it should go, and I felt like the Toyota process matched what we would do,” Harvick said.
The NASCAR community was shocked that Kevin Harvick allowed his son to join Toyota. But this isn’t the first time any driver joined hands with a rival. Daniel Suarez and Erik Jones moved between Toyota, Chevy, and Ford. If this trend continues, Ford's future in NASCAR will become increasingly uncertain.
“I think that the effort that Toyota puts into not only the driving piece of it but also the human piece of it is very important to us as a family. That was really one of the biggest reasons why we went this direction,” Harvick said.
