Formula 2 is heading toward a major change for its next three-season cycle, with the championship set to enter a new era of car design and development from 2027.

According to Formula 1, the new Formula 2 car for the 2027 season has been unveiled at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza during the Italian Grand Prix weekend. The car will be used for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons, bringing several updates while retaining the current Dallara chassis.

“This new car is another important step forward,” Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said, “combining innovation, safety and closer racing while maintaining the level playing field that allows drivers to showcase their ability.” 

Formula 2 has become an important route to Formula 1, giving young drivers the chance to develop before making the move up. Kimi Antonelli, Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad are among the recent drivers who have made that move from F2 to F1, as per Formula1.com.

The 2027 car will get new front and rear wings, giving it a look closer to an F1 car. The changes are also meant to help drivers race closer together.

Another change is the onboard starter, which will let drivers restart the car themselves after a spin or stall. It will also make the job easier for teams during races.

F2 will continue with the current Dallara chassis to keep costs under control. Aramco’s advanced sustainable fuel and Pirelli tyres will also remain part of the package.

The braking, steering and cockpit specifications will stay the same, so drivers will still have the same basic requirements despite the changes to the car.

While there are some clear changes for 2027, the car will still keep several parts of the current setup.

What stays the same on the new F2 car

According to Terry Widdows of Coffee Corner Motorsport, the 2027 Formula 2 car will retain the FIA’s 2024 specifications, while its Marelli electronic and hydraulic systems package will also remain unchanged. The car will also fully comply with the latest FIA safety standards.

“Formula 2 is where the next generation of top drivers are made,” FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said. “The new 2027 car raises the bar on safety, delivers closer racing, improves accessibility, and reinforces our commitment to sustainability.”

The car will also have F1-spec protection and a Titanium Halo, while the physical requirements for drivers will stay the same. So, the 2027 changes add more safety without changing the basic demands on the drivers.

For F2, that means the new car can bring updated safety features while keeping the driving requirements familiar.
