FOX Broadcaster Reveals His Unusual Path to Help Son Become a Driver Against NASCAR Legends' Kids

Former NASCAR Cup Series driver and 2010 Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray has a special way of guiding his son into the racing world. McMurray's son, Carter McMurray, has somewhat made a name for himself in the junior ranks, thanks to his father, who is not going the traditional upbringing route.

It's always easier for drivers' children to come into the limelight, benefiting from everything their racing fathers provide them. Whether it's a top-notch racing setup or race track exposure, the young guns received it all. But McMurray, a FOX broadcaster today, wants his son to be different.

"I have witnessed a lot of my peers' kids, and this has been for the last 20 years," McMurray said on the recent Stacking Pennies podcast. "So it could have been a driver's tale as old as time. And I've watched a lot of parents just give their kids everything, and the kid, after a year or two, was like this for me, like it was fun."

Alongside Carter McMurray, the kids of racing drivers, such as Kyle Larson's son Owen, Kyle Busch's son Brexton, or Kevin Harvick's son Keelan, also grew up racing in the junior series. But for little McMurray, it was about growing up the hard way.

"But, and I was like, I'm not gonna do that. And so I have intentionally tried not to give him the best of everything. I don't want him to be in junk, and I want it to be safe, but I just have, I know that I could always give him a little bit more, but I want him to try to compete with. I just don't want him to be that guy, right?" McMurray further added.

Carter McMurray is a 15-year-old prodigy who completed a successful karting career and went on to make his debut in the SMART Modified Tour. He competes in the US Legend Cars and participated in the Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In many ways, McMurray has been trying to keep his son from becoming another racing prodigy shaped by privilege. Which is why we can see why Carter is progressing from quarter midgets to Legend Cars before earning opportunities in late models and the SMART Modified Tour.

Carter drives the No. 40 Chevrolet for Phil Stefaelli. While he still has time to come to the Truck Series, it's his father who needs to take care of his Truck race now.

Jamie McMurray Set for NASCAR Return at Coronado

Former Cup Series driver Jamie McMurray is all set to break his five-year hiatus to race in the NASCAR Truck Series at the San Diego Street Course on Friday. He will drive the No. 25 RAM Truck at Coronado under the Free Agent program.

"Urban racing requires precision and adaptability, and I am looking forward to making history with Kaulig and RAM," McMurray said on his opportunity with Kaulig and RAM.

McMurray's last race in NASCAR was the 2021 Daytona 500, while his last Truck Series appearance was the 2008 Martinsville race. With that said, it will be interesting to see how he fares when the engines roar at Coronado.
