FOX Reporter Clarifies Nemechek Incident After Texas Race Confusion
After the Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 3, James Hunter Nemechek caught attention for his blood-stained face. As confusion grew, a FOX reporter clarified the reason behind Nemechek’s condition.
"No fight. My understanding is JHN had a bloody nose in the car during the race,” before things got escalated, Bob Pockrass wrote on X on May 3. “That happens occasionally to some drivers and obviously not much you can do to stop it.”
His answer came after a fan raised concerns on social media.
“Hey Bob was there a fight after the race because I’ve seen photos of JHN bleeding after the race,” a fan posted a picture of the 28-year-old, asking Pockrass.
During the Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch consistently ran near the top 10 and was in 11th place on a restart before colliding with Nemechek on lap 266 of 267.
Nosebleeds during races are not uncommon for NASCAR drivers. Dale Earnhardt Jr. once shared a story about his nosebleed. While racing at Sonoma, his face was stained with blood. When Chad Knaus, Stacy Compton’s crew chief, walked up to Earnhardt Jr.'s vehicle, he saw the bloody nose and backed out.
“I was having a bloody nose during the race. He walked up to me to probably punch me. He’s like, ‘Oh, somebody’s already been here.’ “ Dale Jr. said.
As clarifications dropped for Nemechek, drivers have started to weigh in on the last-lap incident. Denny Hamlin, too, broke his silence.
Denny Hamlin Questions Whether NASCAR Should Penalise Kyle Busch for James Hunter Nemechek Contact
After making contact with Nemechek into the backstretch wall, Busch did not lift or stop. As they entered turn 3, Busch hit him again with an even heavier right-side impact. Had NASCAR not quickly thrown the caution flag, the situation could have escalated into something far more serious.
The incident between Busch and Nemechek has sparked a debate on whether the #8 should be penalized for the incident.
During his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin was questioned whether NASCAR should step in and penalize Busch. But the 23XI co-owner was unsure.
“Does NASCAR just kind of use their common sense judgment or do they say, well there’s just not enough evidence?” said Hamlin. "You know when I said I washed Chastain up into the wall, I got a point fine. But in the end it was because I said it. I don't know that Kyle's refuting it, but he's also not saying, yeah, I took…I don't know. In so many words, he is."
NASCAR penalized Denny Hamlin with a $50,000 fine and a 25-point deduction after he deliberately made contact with Ross Chastain in the March 2023 Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway.
