Hamlin Calls Hocevar’s Breakthrough a Big Moment for NASCAR’s Future
Denny Hamlin predicted that Carson Hocevar's breakthrough win at Talladega would spark a dominant run for the rookie.
“Carson Hocevar, I was really happy for him… You know, this could be a moment in which he's now tasted victory, he understands it, you're not pressured by 'when are you going to do it?' It could unleash like even more speed out of him,” Hamlin explained.
So far this season, Hocevar has finished in fourth place multiple times. In the last two seasons, he came close to a win with second-place finishes. But a win had eluded him for the longest time. That's why when he won at Talladega, it could open the floodgates for more wins.
He sees the win as a major plus for NASCAR's branding, noting, “It was a great win for him and great win for the sport because you got some new blood in there… he's going to be part of that short list to carry the sport for quite some time.”
Fans already love Hocevar for his bold form of racing. And we saw that at Talladega when Hocevar celebrated his win by positioning himself outside the driver's window during his burnout.
Hamlin appreciated the logic behind the move, adding, “I heard him say that they get to see the crowd but the crowd never gets to see them celebrate right when they’re doing it.” For Hamlin, the mix of raw talent and fan engagement makes Hocevar a key figure for the sport's next era.
The Logic Behind Hocevar’s Viral Celebration
Carson Hocevar used his 6-foot-4 height to pull off a celebration that the Talladega crowd won't forget anytime soon. After his victory, he brought his No. 77 Chevrolet to the apron and perched himself on the edge of the driver-side door.
By reaching down to work the pedals while sitting outside the cockpit, he gave the fans a clear view of his face as he rolled past the grandstands.
“I just wanted them to get as loud as possible. I felt like they would if they could see me seeing them,” Hocevar explained. The rookie wanted to freeze time and absorb every detail of his first win. “I just wanted to make sure I soaked every bit of it in. I think I could tell you what everybody was wearing, where every seat was, where every 77 shirt was… I could tell you every second.”
