Daniel Suarez's amazing run at Charlotte immediately drew criticism as many felt that he only won the race because the contest ended 27 laps early due to rain. But while critics continued to raise questions, his wife Julia Piquet strongly defended the win and stressed that the Spire Motorsports driver had truly “earned it.”

The race in itself was anything but simple. Kyle Larson dominated Stage 1 while Denny Hamlin mastered Stage 2. In the final stage, Christopher Bell seemed to have wings on his machine as he surged through, and it was not until Suarez and his No. 7 team made a crucial two-tire strategy call that he became competitive.

Then came a slew of restarts where Suarez had to continue defending against Hamlin and Bell before rain stopped the race, granting him the dream finish any driver would wish for.

After the win, Julia described the emotional scenes on pit road. “It was a scene out of a movie, right? The whole hugging in the rain, everything on the road. It was really cool,” she said. She then explained why this race mattered so much to her husband.

“I think this is the one race that he has circled that he really wanted to win… being the crown jewel, being a Coca-Cola driver for over 10 years now, being a home race.”

Then came the moment where she directly took on critics attacking the weather-shortened finish. “He earned it. It wasn’t just a, ‘Oh, it rained out. He was there by luck.’ No, the strategy fell right. They did the two-tire call. He earned all those restarts.”

The reasoning, according to Julia, was simple. “He was relentless. He was not going to not win this race.” In fact, what she pointed out was true. It was this exact aggression Suarez was putting into the restarts that kept him ahead.

How the two-tire gamble changed the Coca-Cola 600

Daniel Suarez’s Coca-Cola 600 victory just seemed so manageable right at the final caution around Lap 356 when Spire Motorsports decided to undertake a very risky two-tire strategy call.

At the time when leaders such as Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, and Tyler Reddick took four fresh Goodyear tires, an amazing call was made by crew chief Ryan Sparks that allowed for only changing the right-side double tires. This immediately helped the No. 7 Chevrolet jump roughly 13 spots on pit road and, at its restart, become the leader.

At Charlotte’s 1.5-mile oval, track position is critical because the Next Gen car struggles in dirty air, especially entering Turns 1 and 2 on restarts. Suarez then managed to defend against severe attacks from his competitors, who, despite fresher tires and better pace, just could not catch the lead made during the pit stop.

As the race stopped due to rain on Lap 373, Suarez crossed the line with a victory after strongly defending multiple laps, showcasing exactly why Julia Piquet defended him while stressing that it wasn’t just simple luck.
