Historic NASCAR Track's future in jeopardy as racing series shuts down

The Rockingham Speedway finds itself at the center of uncertainty. The historic NASCAR track was bought by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) in January this year, but the series is facing growing operational troubles, and a big domino fell this week.

On Thursday, the IHRA confirmed the cancellation of all remaining races of the 2026 IHRA Nitro Drag Racing Series. This raised fresh questions about the future of several tracks owned by the sanctioning body, including Rockingham.

In June, IHRA insider Aaron England had reported that multiple series under the IHRA banner had been canceled. Those reports were later confirmed in a subsequent report by Dragzine, which revealed the extent of the organization's issues.

The IHRA has experienced multiple rounds of schedule revisions, staff departures, and layoffs this year. Many top personnel were fired in the first quarter before the situation escalated further, with additional reports indicating that racers and vendors had yet to receive payments.

Rockingham returned to the NASCAR spotlight earlier this year when it hosted the Easter weekend race. However, that momentum has now been overshadowed by turmoil surrounding the IHRA.

The IHRA had entered the year with ambitious plans, announcing the acquisition of Rockingham among several others. At the time, officials described the purchases as part of a long-term vision to preserve historic racing venues while expanding the organization's footprint across multiple forms of motorsport.

However, that optimism turned into uncertainty within months.

The impact of the cancellation

The IHRA isn't positioning the cancellation of the 2026 IHRA Nitro Drag Racing Series as a blow to the parties involved.

"This isn’t the end of national event drag racing; it’s a reset," said IHRA President Dustin Farthing (via FloRacing). "By strengthening our foundation first, we’ll build a stronger future for our racers, tracks, sponsors, and fans."

While there has been no announcement regarding Rockingham Speedway's NASCAR schedule, the track's ownership structure has placed it under scrutiny.

This is significant because Rockingham has re-established itself as an important stop on NASCAR's calendar, with the annual Easter weekend event becoming one of the sport's most anticipated races.

Just a day before the IHRA confirmed the cancellation of the drag racing series, insider Aaron England reported that multiple racers hadn't received their winnings from the IHRA Columbus event.

Whether the ownership group can stabilize operations in time to safeguard Rockingham's place on NASCAR's calendar remains a topic of discussion.
