The NASCAR garage often sees loyalties and legalities clash. However, the tensions at Joe Gibbs Racing are getting noticed like never before, amidst the long-standing legal battle between the team and its former competition director, Chris Gabehart.

Following months of speculation, some behind-the-scenes movements, and even things such as secret files, private investigators, etc., a definitive trial date has finally appeared.

In a recent tweet posted by renowned NASCAR journalist Jordan Bianchi, team JGR has proposed a trial date of November 16, 2026, anticipating it to last at least five days.

The timing makes it interesting for various reasons, which we will dive into slowly. There were expectations that JGR might want to distance itself from the case, considering the Coach’s comments post Las Vegas, where he said he didn’t want to be in court the next day.

However, with the proposed trial date stretching the drama beyond the ongoing season, it seems as if the Coach wants to make a statement that he isn’t backing down without a fight.

The Toyota team has accused Gabehart of removing internal materials, including race-related data and documents, in violation of team agreements, and that such information could be used outside the organization. In this case, it’s with rival team Spire Motorsports, where Gabehart is currently employed. However, details around his actual last working date at JGR are still murky.

The argument JGR is making is that Spire has an incentive to make use of data offered by Gabehart, considering how Spire has just one Cup Series victory since its inception in 2018.

Gabehart did admit to taking pictures of a JGR Excel file, but he insists that they haven’t been shared, stating they were only for reviewing his decision before joining Spire Motorsports.

Meanwhile, Spire has denied receiving any confidential information from Gabehart, as its representative Lawrence Cameron stated that the information shown in court contains data that is available publicly and has nothing to do with JGR.

How Joe Gibbs Racing's Proposed Date Could Affect Denny Hamlin’s Season

There appears to be another deeper reason why JGR may have proposed that trial date. Denny Hamlin is seeing a late-career resurgence, and his 61st Cup Series win at Las Vegas came following a lot of battles away from the race track. He was involved in the Antitrust lawsuit as a co-owner of 23XI Racing, and later that year, he lost his father in a house fire.

The No.11 JGR driver also came close to winning at Martinsville, having led 292 laps. However, two late cautions took the lead away from him, giving Chase Elliott the top spot and Chevrolet’s first win of the season.

With the trial taking place eight days after the end of the ongoing season, JGR likely wants Hamlin’s quest for a maiden Cup Series title to go unperturbed by removing anything that could potentially derail his championship.
