Joe Gibbs Racing prospect Max Reaves returned to Victory Lane at Flat Rock Speedway on Saturday. However, his performance sparked criticism after an aggressive late-race battle with rival Tristan McKee.

Driving the No. 18 Toyota Camry, Reaves took control of the Sunbelt Rentals 150 early, passing Carson Brown, and never looked back despite heavy traffic and a late restart. The victory marked his fifth career ARCA Menards Series East win and second of the 2026 season. He credited his team afterwards. 

“My guys brought me such a good car, so we had to win this one. I wanted to back it up from last year, but there was a lot of good competition here this year. They ran a good race. I like this track; I’m learning to like it a lot. I like these little tracks like this.”

The decisive moment came after the final restart when Reaves held off challenges from Tristan McKee and defending champion Isaac Kitzmiller. Contact between the frontrunners allowed Reaves to pull away, though McKee was unhappy with the No. 18 driver's restart.

Based on a report from JosephSrigley.com, Kitzmiller, who finished third, felt that passing was extremely difficult around the tight oval and said some contact was almost unavoidable if drivers wanted to fight for the lead. Reaves, however, defended his approach and believed his positioning against Kitzmiller made the difference.

Reaves is certainly being discussed by fans and viewers, but it has very little to do with his performance in the race itself.  

Nepotism allegations against Reaves and JGR

Many users voiced their displeasure on X, criticising the privileged background the driver comes from, as his father is the CEO of the Cook Out restaurant chain. 

As such, one user on X said, “I wish my dad owned a chain restaurant”, while another added, “Pretty ****** when Reeves daddy buys JGR cars using a weekly budget that is bigger than the annual budget for most teams.”

One more user referenced the JGR vs Spire Motorsport lawsuit and said, “Wonder if JGR will sue Spire in ARCA also seeing they are doing well.” 

Another user was much harsher and said, “Who the h*** would want to hear from that clown? Last time I heard him, he was telling us all how he “earned” that ride.”

Another user simply stated, “Driving a Gibbs car, he should win.”
