Kevin Harvick has now suggested that the O'Reilly Series may no longer be an excellent developmental pathway for drivers hoping to one day race in the Cup Series. These comments come at a time when several top prospects are finding it difficult to adapt to NASCAR’s highest level, reigniting the debate over whether the current ladder system still works.

Speaking on SPEED with Harvick and Buxton podcast, the 2014 Cup Series champion said that the issue stems from the massive gap between the rungs of the American motorsports ladder.

“Well, that's a catch-22 in my opinion, because of the fact that, you know, you've got this great racing in the O'Reilly series and everything about it is totally different than what you have in Cup,” he said.

The basic stance that Harvick maintains is that the O'Reilly Series continues to provide excellent entertainment, but whether it remains a good developmental program is open to debate.

To support that argument, he pointed to Connor Zilisch, who, after a dominant 2025 O'Reilly Series season, has struggled in Cup competition. Zilisch recorded five DNFs in his first 16 Cup starts, including three straight at Charlotte, Nashville, and Michigan.

“That series is supposed to be the series that is prepping the next generation for Cup racing,” Harvick explained before adding, “Connor Zilisch won nine or 10 races last year, and he's in a spot that nobody thought he would be in with all the struggles that he's having.”

Before concluding, Harvick shifted the focus to Corey Heim, who captured the 2025 Truck Series championship with a record 12 victories.

“You look at Corey Heim. Corey Heim won a whole bunch of truck races. He's gotten in that Cup car and done pretty well every time that he's driven it.”

Corey Heim's rise signals a new emerging pathway for NASCAR Teams

Even though the traditional developmental ladder receives much of the attention within NASCAR circles, Corey Heim’s trajectory is evidence of a different pathway gaining traction.

He started by capturing the 2025 Truck Series championship with a record 12 victories before securing a full-time Cup Series seat with 23XI Racing for 2027. Before that, Heim had already impressed in limited Cup starts, including a sixth-place finish at Bristol.

The rise Heim has enjoyed is quite similar to Carson Hocevar’s. The latter won the 2024 Cup Series Rookie of the Year award after advancing through the Truck Series and later became a Cup race winner at Talladega in 2026.

The example of Heim, while leaving the O'Reilly Series in a difficult position from a developmental standpoint, provides a pathway that many aspiring drivers could now look toward.
