Kurt Busch Raises Questions Over Kyle Busch Escaping NASCAR Penalty
NASCAR's contrasting decisions about post-race penalties in the Texas Cup Series Race have been in the spotlight for over a week now. Many drivers and analysts have given their opinion on the same, and now Kurt Busch has come forward to speak about the incidents, one of which involved his brother, Kyle Busch.
Two similar incidents took place just laps apart. The one involving Kyle Busch and John Hunter Nemechek occurred during a restart while both drivers fought for P12. And the other incident occurred between Ryan Preece and Ty Gibbs.
The difference between the two? Preece was penalized for ending Gibbs' race after contact, while Busch faced no consequence for similarly wrecking Nemechek. NASCAR's reasoning pointed to Preece's radio message a few laps before his incident, where he sounded his frustration with Gibbs' driving and showed intent to wreck, for which he was handed a $50,000 fine and a 25-point deduction.
While talking about the incident on the "Door Bumper Clear" podcast, Kurt Busch said, "That's the problem of the problem. NASCAR shouldn't go off of what someone says on the radio. They should be able to look them the eyeball, like the eyeball test. What my brother did to John Hunter was the same exact thing. Now you're in, like, a courtroom. You may have or you could have, like, you change one little word in a sentence, but to have Preece penalized and not my brother. I mean, I have no problem saying it."
The retired Busch also recalled the time when NASCAR penalized him three days after an All-Star Race. On a Tuesday after the race, Busch confessed on a radio show that he intentionally wrecked Robby Gordon to bring out a caution in his favor. The following day, NASCAR penalized him $100,000 and docked points.
As for his brother's incident, NASCAR has issued the No. 8 RCR driver a warning.
Kyle Busch walks the tightrope as NASCAR's warning grows louder
The two-time Cup Series champion escaped the penalty at Texas. But this is not his first time he's come so close to being penalized. During the race in Bristol, after Riley Herbst spun him around, he seemingly took revenge in the closing stages of the race.
Fans saw this move as deliberate, but NASCAR thought otherwise. While talking about the same on the "Hauler Talk" podcast, Mike Forde, NASCAR Managing Director for Racing Communications, said, "Let's not have to be having this conversation as often as we are, because the benefit of the doubt is running out pretty quickly."
Forde warned that repeated incidents like this might lead to harsher penalties or even a race suspension for Kyle Busch. And with the way the season is currently panning out for the Richard Childress Racing driver, that is the last thing he wants.
