The 2026 season has been challenging for Kyle Busch, and things have taken an unfortunate turn. His family released a statement on X, confirming that the No. 8 driver has been hospitalized ahead of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. 

“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization. He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation”, the statement on X read. 

As a result, Busch will miss the upcoming Cup race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Shortly afterwards, Richard Childress Racing, his team, also issued a statement confirming the driver’s hospitalization.

“Kyle Busch’s health is our upmost priority, and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them. Kyle is an integral part of our organization, and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery. His No. 8 Chevrolet will be ready and waiting for him. 

We’re thankful to Austin Hill for stepping in to drive the No. 8 Chevrolet this weekend. Please keep Kyle and the Busch family in your prayers, and help us respect the family’s privacy at this time”, the team’s statement read on X. 

Additionally, Austin Hill has been confirmed to fill in for him at the race. He will drive alongside Austin Dillon, who drives the No. 3 Chevrolet for the team. 

Neither statement has revealed any specific illness. However, at a recent race, the driver was heard seeking medical assistance. 

Kyle Busch: “I’m going to need a shot”

With 38 laps left during the Go Bowling race at Watkins Glen, Busch spoke to his team over the radio, requesting a doctor once the race was over. 

He said over the team comms radio, “Can somebody try to find Bill Heisel? He’s the Hendrick (Motorsports) doctor guy. Tell him I need him after the race, please.”

The driver did not explain why he wanted to see a doctor, but he said he wanted to meet him at the team bus, saying, “Uh, bus. I’m going to need a shot.”

Despite the illness, Busch delivered the best performance of his season so far, finishing in eighth place.

According to Mike Joy’s comments on the Fox Sports 1 broadcast, Busch was suffering from a sinus cold through the week leading up to the Go Bowling race weekend.

However, it remains unclear why Busch requested medical assistance, and whether or not the shot had anything to do with his sinus cold.
