Kyle Larson Reconsiders Indy 500 Dream After Back-to-Back Setbacks
Without a doubt, Kyle Larson is one of the best racing drivers of this generation, and his records show it. From NASCAR to Midget Racing, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has excelled at every step. However, it was in IndyCar that Larson struggled, not because of his skill, but because luck did not stand by his side.
Despite this, the HMS star wants to try out the Indy 500 again and take care of unfinished business. In a recent interview with SiriusXM Radio, Larson spoke about the possibility, saying,
"I think my days of attempting The Double are over. But, you know, I wouldn’t—you never say never about trying at least the Indy 500 again. But I don't know; we will see. It’s tough to say. That won’t come until after my full-time NASCAR career is over, and I don’t know when that will be."
Notably, Kyle Larson attempted the Indy 500 twice as part of his attempt at conquering The Double, i.e, completing 1100 miles of racing at the 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, in 2024 and 2025. However, Mother Nature and luck weren't by his side, and as a result, he failed to finish the race. Despite this, he wants to try it even though it looks to be a hard nut to crack.
"And at that point (post-NASCAR retirement), I know there are a lot of drivers who’ve been successful there in their 40s or beyond. But for me, it’s just like, I don't know. I think that (IndyCar) will be a lot to take on. I am thankful for the last few years of being able to attempt it and get to start the race and all of that. But yeah, to do it all over again would be tough to tackle," the reigning Cup Series champion further added.
In 2024, Larson missed the start of the Coca-Cola 600 after rain pushed the start of the Indy 500 by four hours. And in 2025, both his races were marred by crashes.
With that said, Larson has yet to make a final decision on his Indy 500 attempt. However, his experience at The Double is back in focus, with Katherine Legge, who will become the next driver to attempt The Double, leaning on him for advice.
Kyle Larson drops weather warning for Katherine Legge ahead of her Double attempt
Kyle Larson has shared his tips and warnings with Katherine Legge before the 45-year-old Briton goes on to attempt the Indy 500-Coca-Cola 600 Double on May 24.
During the Watkins Glen weekend, a couple of days before Legge officially confirmed the news, Larson was asked about what it could mean for her to get the opportunity to conquer the Memorial Day weekend feat.
Speaking about how the weather can be instrumental, Larson said, "First off, I think it would be awesome if she could do it. The challenges, as everybody was aware of mine, is just the weather. The driving and whatnot is a challenge in its own, but ultimately, it’s the weather that can put a damper on things if you get any bit of a delay."
Legge, an IndyCar and NASCAR veteran, will try out The Double at the age of 45. With this, she is set to become the oldest driver and the first woman to do so.
