Max Verstappen has never been the one to sugarcoat things. Just days removed from putting pen to paper on a new deal that secures his future at Red Bull through 2030, he arrived at his home race riding a wave of good news. However, what followed him on track told a very different story. 

The weekend had been tough for Verstappen right from the beginning of the sprint qualifying, but things came to a head when he crashed heavily into the barriers during lap 1 of the main race. Coming out of the final corner, the No. 3 driver dipped his wheel across the white line, which made him lose the rear of the car. 

While talking to the media in the media pen after the incident, the four-time world champion was asked about how he felt about the weekend as a whole; he did not mince his words. 

"This weekend, of course, [was] disappointing," Verstappen said, as per the reports put out by Formula One on August 23rd. "I think disappointing pace, and a disappointing end to the weekend. I think you can sum it up like that." 

Away from the race track, Verstappen revealed that he had been battling an illness much of the weekend, adding another layer of difficulty to his Zandvoort weekend. He further expressed that he was looking forward to the week off before the Italian Grand Prix to rest and recover. 

"I've not been feeling well, so I'm just looking forward to a week's break where I can just recover, because I really haven't been feeling good," Verstappen told RacingNews 365.

With the summer break and the disappointing Dutch Grand Prix now behind him, Max Verstappen will be hoping for a strong showing when Formula One makes a stop at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen have endured a difficult first half of the 2026 season, with not just the results but also having to deal with a wave of high-profile departures, including Christian Horner, Helmut Marko and Adrian Newey. 

Despite all these changes, Max Verstappen has not felt the need to look elsewhere. While talking to Sky Sports, he opened up about his decision to stay at the team. 

"A few names have left but, at the same time, it's still my family," Verstappen said in the interview via Sky Sports. "I never felt that desire or need to change to another team, to try and win somewhere else."

"If I feel well within the team here, why should I? Because I know that they do everything for me and they know that I do everything for them once I'm on the track and trying to get the results." 

For Max Verstappen, the loyalty continues to outweigh the turbulence of a difficult season.
