Time and again, the NASCAR fans have been reminded of how dangerous it can get on the track. However, the recent incident in the Dover Motor Speedway pit lane serves as a reminder about how things can get dangerous even on the pit lane when there are no cars. 

After the NASCAR Cup Series practice on Friday, May 14, at the All-Star weekend at Dover, the teams had to set up their pit boxes for the upcoming races. However, a 4,000-pound pit cart used by the Spire Motorsports team started rolling down towards the pit lane area. 

It was at this moment that Donovan Williams, a tire carrier for Daniel Suarez's team, jumped in front to stop the cart from hitting FOX reporter Amanda Busick. Another FOX NASCAR reporter, Bob Pockrass, posted on X, giving an update about Williams. 

Williams, who is a former UConn football player, was released from the hospital that same evening after X-rays showed no broken bones. Given the injury, Williams will be unable to participate in the pit crew challenge on Sunday, which is part of the All-Star weekend festivities.

Andrew Egnarski will replace Williams as Daniel Suarez’s tire carrier this weekend. Jarius Morehead will then take Egnarski’s spot on Rajah Caruth’s No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet for Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly race.

While the carts may not appear especially heavy, the added pit equipment makes them weigh hundreds of pounds. The gradient of the pit lane area accelerated the cart. But Williams fortunately avoided major injuries.

NASCAR Reporter Recalls Pit Lane Crash at Dover

The Dover incident has brought renewed attention to safety issues on pit road, particularly regarding the control of heavy equipment. Officials have since begun reviewing related procedures.

Taken aback, Busick recalled the incident. She pointed out how it all took place in a split second.

“You see it all happening in slow motion, but super-fast," she said. "I could see the cart coming; I could see who I now know is Donovan Williams, trying to brace the cart, but it just had so much speed. This all happened in probably less than half a second. Donovan, in his attempt to shield me, we kind of got collected.” 

The former UConn football player suffered severe injuries during the NASCAR Dover crash, including a deep wound, heavy road rash on his right hand, and numerous bruises.

After visiting Williams in the hospital, Busick shared on social media the next day that she wished they had met under better circumstances.

This incident has now raised questions about NASCAR’s safety protocol for pit road and the equipment used by NASCAR teams.
