After back-to-back debut approvals by NASCAR in 2026, Cleetus McFarland's luck seemed to have run out this time as the renowned YouTuber failed to get an approval for the Talladega Superspeedway race. A leading NASCAR executive opened up about the decision and McFarland's future in the sport.

Eric Peterson, the director of the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, recently spoke about the decision on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "We take a look at each individual driver and their experience, and we generally work up through ARCA, which Cleetus is doing, and the Truck Series, and then obviously O'Reilly, and on to Cup."

Peterson then explained how NASCAR approves the drivers based on their experiences at different tracks. "Generally start that at short tracks, get some experience there, and then move on to intermediate-style racetracks, and then finally super speedways."

Given the verdict on McFarland is already out, the NASCAR executive shared a hint about his future. He said, "He needs more seat time at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series level, as well as ARCA and Truck, you know, before he's ready to move to the next step."

Notably, Cleetus McFarland's rise in NASCAR shocked many as the popular social media star grabbed two huge opportunities to race in the Truck and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2026, and both were his debut races despite having minimal experience.

Both of his appearances were far from ideal. His finish in 32nd place was impressive, but there were mistakes there that seemed to show NASCAR enough. His reaction to the news indicates that he is ready to bounce back strongly from this minor setback.

Cleetus McFarland Shared His Thoughts on NASCAR's Decision

Taking to his official Facebook account, Cleetus McFarland shared a video, where he touched upon the latest decision by NASCAR.

"They did not see enough,” McFarland said. “Nonetheless, NASCAR has said ‘we need to see you run more ARCA and more Trucks, and have some of those on my calendar, coming up, but in O’Reilly, I am still limited to short tracks.”

Apparently, Garrett Mitchell, aka Cleetus McFarland, has only seven ARCA Menards races to his name, and now one each in the Truck and O'Reilly Auto Parts Series races, making it a single-digit (nine in total) race experiences.

To be able to race in tracks like Talladega and Daytona, you need to have experience in handling adverse conditions. McFarland is yet to get there, but if he continues taking part in Truck and ARCA races, the YouTuber could make a push to be back in contention to race in larger tracks.
