After the successful inaugural race weekend at Naval Base Coronado in 2026, NASCAR is looking to return to San Diego next year. The series could reportedly host the second edition of the race on July 4, 2027, the Independence Day of the United States of America.

In addition to this report from The Orange County Register, Amy Lupo, president of NASCAR San Diego, said that they are working with the Navy to work out the logistics, if it were to happen.

Moreover, ahead of the race, NASCAR Chief Executive Officer Ben Kennedy, the grandson of Bill France Jr., also shared the series' hopes to return to the Naval Base.

"I hope so," he told the Sports Business Journal. "It’d be great. It’s a one-year commitment. So we’re focused on this weekend, and I’m sure there’ll be a lot of conversations after we come out of San Diego with the Navy and with the military to talk about: 'Is there a second year? Is there a future here? And if so, what does that look like?'"

Initially, fans were surprised that the governing body did not arrange the race weekend around Independence Day weekend after they removed Chicago from the schedule. Now, there's a bright side to this, at least that is what it looks like for 2027.

Amy Lupo told the Orange County Register that they would bring "a lot of changes" to the event for potential future iterations.

The Truck, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and the Cup Series races at the Naval Base Coronado pulled in as many as 125,000 fans from the United States and 17 countries. Besides this, they were able to pull Red Bull, the Austrian energy drink giant, to host a fan fest event, which is very rare in NASCAR.

How NASCAR found a "natural fit" in San Diego

After the San Diego Street Course race weekend came to an end, NASCAR journalist Jeff Gluck labeled the venue an ideal one for the military and its personnel. In a clip of the "The Teardown" podcast shared by Dirty Mo Media on X, he said:

"We obviously know that NASCAR and the military go so hand in hand, and it was such a natural fit from that standpoint. We got to meet even new friends from the Navy, right? People that listen to the show every week came up to us, and they're like, 'Hey, like this is so amazingly cool for me.'"

NASCAR honors US military veterans every year when it hosts the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend. Moreover, the sport has had many soldiers-turned-civilians compete as drivers or the team crew and achieve championship success.

Now, with that said, it will be interesting to see if NASCAR manages to hold talks with the military and returns to the Naval Base Coronado next year and celebrates America's 251st Independence Day.
