Often, any form of racing requires one to be resilient on the track, regardless of the situation. In Tommy Baldwin Jr.’s case, he had to adopt the same philosophy off the track, too, after he got diagnosed with cancer in August 2023.

The veteran NASCAR figure recently opened up about one of the toughest battles he has faced in his life. While he eventually got declared cancer-free, the journey was obviously not a smooth one.

In an interaction with Kenny Wallace, Baldwin Jr. admitted it took him longer than expected to get back in shape, but he now leads a disciplined life and stays health-conscious.

“You know I had a little bout with cancer, and I tell you, it kicked my a**. It took longer than I expected to get back to 100 per cent, but I am in good shape now, it's cleared, it's gone, thank goodness. I am at the gym every day at 6 AM, so it's great, I am good, no complaints. Inspired some people along the way.”

For Baldwin Jr., however, it wasn’t just about getting better and leading a normal life once again. That phase changed him and gave him a new purpose beyond racing. He has been offering support to people who are going through a similar challenge, and at times, he has even been called upon to speak to patients who are having a tough time during their diagnosis.

“I still help people from time to time that are going through some stuff. Believe it or not, the oncology place will call me when they're struggling with a patient that won't listen to them, and sometimes I'll go up there and help them.

"It was an experience, man, lying there. It got you thinking about a lot of different things, and it changed me a little bit, but I am glad to have come out of it and be healthy again and do whatever else I can do to help everybody that's gone through it or is going through it,” he concluded.

Tommy’s never-give-up attitude is probably what led his son not to give up on his racing career during this tough phase.

How Luke Baldwin Kept Going On

For Luke, 2023 must have been a bittersweet year, as he had just won the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing title in Florida, shortly before Tommy’s diagnosis was confirmed.

While Luke was aware of the gravity of the situation, he continued to race until it was impossible not to share responsibilities at home, at which point he had to temporarily step back.

However, much like his father, Luke also bounced back, and in his return to racing, he won the 2024 SMART Modified Tour. He is currently chasing his third consecutive title in the series.

His determination also led to a NASCAR call-up soon enough; he made his Truck Series debut in 2025, on a part-time basis with ThorSport Racing. As of the ongoing season, he drives for Team Reaume in the Truck Series and for Hettinger Racing in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.
