Bubba Wallace received a painful punishment for crossing the double yellow line during the Quaker State 400 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The 23XI Racing star finished the race in runner-up position, but failed to hold on to it due to the penalty, leaving him furious over the questionable decision.

Now, renowned NBC broadcasters Jamie McMurray and Steve Letarte have shared their side, and they stand with the governing body. They dissected the footage of the incident on the "Inside the Race" podcast. McMurray shared a clip of their discussion on X, where he said:

"The reason you get below the yellow line is because you don't want to cause the wreck. We have seen that in the past and people not get penalized because NASCAR has known like, well, if they hadn't, then there would have been a big wreck. And the difference here is it's the last lap."

Following this, Letarte argued that if NASCAR did not impose limits and penalize drivers, they would continue to pull such risky moves, causing huge wrecks at tracks such as Daytona and Talladega. Explaining his rationale in the video shared by McMurray, Letarte said:

"I also believe it was in his best interest to not just lift to get back in line because he was coming to the checkered flag. And I'm a believer of if I'm the first guy back to the checkered flag, see if the tower will take this win away from me. But I like that NASCAR stood on that this right here is out of bounds. So this one, unfortunately, I thought was an easy call. If you're a Bubba Wallace fan, you can disagree."

Notably, Wallace was pushing for the win in the final lap after the overtime restart, and this was when he went beyond the yellow line down the backstretch while battling three-wide against Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar.

He finished the race in second place, but the penalty dropped him to 29th. He lost 27 important championship points. However, Wallace and his team disagreed with the penalty.

Bubba Wallace let his feelings known after NASCAR penalty

Following the conclusion of the Atlanta race, Bubba Wallace came forward to defend his stance. Speaking to TNT Sports after the race, the 23XI Racing driver stated that he did not gain any place and that the penalty was uncalled for.

"I turned left and got super loose and so just to keep it straight, I ended up there," Wallace said in a video shared by TNT Sports on X. "It’s unfortunate. If you look at SMT, I was all over the brakes trying to just give the spot back. It says don’t go below the yellow line and gain a position, which I didn’t. I was still third."

Wallace shared that he was shoved by Ty Gibbs behind him, which led him to lose control and breach the track limit. Post-race, he had a confrontation with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

"I got a shove from (Ty Gibbs) to go to second, so technically, no positions were gained in doing that," Wallace added.

As things stand, Bubba Wallace is in 13th place in the drivers' standings with 493 points. He is still at risk of being eliminated from the Chase (Top 16 advance to playoffs), and the penalty at Atlanta has been a huge blow for him.
