Over the years, Jeff Burton carved his name as one of the most legendary drivers in NASCAR. His journey, stretching from the racetrack to behind the microphone, has been an exciting one.

In a recent appearance on the Scene Vault podcast, Burton shared the story behind his first win at the Busch Series at the Martinsville Speedway and how it almost landed him in the hospital.

Jeff claimed 1990 to be his hardest year in racing. “I won my first race with Sam at Martinsville, and it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders,” he recalled his win at the Busch Series.

Although the win was nothing less than spectacular, Burton admitted to pushing his body to its limits.

“A couple months prior to that, my father-in-law, who is a physician, he threatened to admit me in the hospital for exhaustion and dehydration,” he said.

For Burton, the season was inconsistent. He often finished in the top-10 and even recorded a runner-up at Nazareth, but struggled to win.

" Never in my life did I question what I wanted to do, except for then.” Burton said. “It felt like it was one failure after the next, and I had worked myself to the point of physically exhausted,” he added. 

NASCAR has seen its fair share of similar incidents over the years, including a similar situation during the 2026 race at COTA.

Extreme Heat Triggers Health Concerns at COTA

The intense Texas heat at COTA led to multiple health scares during the race weekend, briefly overshadowing the on-track action.

During the race, several drivers reported cool suit failures. In the severe heat and the NASCAR cockpit temperatures soaring well over 120°F, drivers like Erik Jones and Kyle Larson began to fade due to dehydration and exhaustion.

Alex Bowman abandoned his car mid-race as he did not feel well enough to continue.

AJ Allmendinger faced one of the most serious issues during the race. Despite the heat and facing a cool suit failure, he managed to finish ninth.

However, effects of the heat became evident after the race, He was taken to the infield care center on a stretcher as a result of the heat.
