The weekend at Talladega was not an easy one for many racers, especially for Jesse Love. He started strong from the pole and even led the most laps (37), but unfortunately got pushed back in the final six laps, finishing seventh.

Speaking to reporters after the race, the No. 2 Camaro driver for Richard Childress Racing was visibly dejected and puzzled despite the kind of show he put up in the O'Reilly race.

“I've definitely made some mistakes on some blocks that I missed today. Maybe there were some times in the beginning of the race I should have helped my line a little bit more, which I did a good job at the end of the race to get back to the lead.

However, despite the disappointment, the Richard Childress driver acknowledged his own role in the finish, bringing it down to poor execution.

The blocking thing was more of getting used to some different visual tools I have in my car. Even though I feel like I made progress on that front, it was still taking some getting used to.”

Jesse also described an unusual and confusing push from Cole Custer that eventually left him exposed.

“When the double zero got to my right rear, such a weird sensation, like once they got to a certain part of my bumper, once there was a very specific moment on my back bumper. I mean, he was going to go left, or he was going to go right. There was no blocking the run, even though it wasn't even a run.

I have to obviously watch it back, but it's definitely confusing. I'm looking in my mirror, at my right rear, and we should have just gotten down, but by the time that I finally give up on the double zero and go to look at the bottom, the hole is already closing too fast, and I got hung in the middle, and then we were screwed.”

He then also spoke of the coordination between him and teammate Austin Hill, which proved to be difficult on the Superspeedway.

“I felt like it was the worst me and Austin have ever run. Whenever I was with him, we couldn't, like, even if we were like helping each other and trying to push each other, we would just give each other one little pop, and then we would disconnect by like three car lengths. It was weird.”

While this lot of Chevrolet drivers went into introspection mode, another Chevrolet camp was celebrating.

Corey Day’s Wild Finish at Talladega

Much like the Cup Series, the O’Reilly series also saw nail-biting action right down to the last second. In the final lap, Sam Mayer was fighting to keep control of the lead, but then he spun while trying to block a charging run from behind.

Meanwhile, a separate multiple-car pileup at turns 3-4 brought out the caution lap, ending the race while Day was leading to win.

Being clearly ahead of the pack, Day was declared the winner, while Brent Crews and Sheldon Creed rounded out the podium.

For someone who didn't lead any laps but the final one, Corey Day just proved that sometimes, showing up when it really matters is enough.
