Ryan Blaney's Wife Gianna Opens Up On Past Pregnancy Struggles
Ryan Blaney and his wife, Gianna, often take a balanced approach to showcasing their personal life. However, a recent revelation from Gianna shed light on an emotional moment in their lives, when their son faced a life-threatening situation during birth last year.
In a recent interaction with Samantha Busch on the "Certified Oversharer" podcast, Gianna Blaney opened up about having an emergency C-section and how the doctors at the time informed her about their son's dire health condition.
"Next thing I knew, it was prep for surgery, and my nurse was prepping me for surgery. She was in my ear saying, 'Okay, his heart's too low. We have to bring you into an emergency C-section.'"
"The doctor comes, and she says, I want you to prepare yourself. He may not have a heartbeat when he's born. This is how serious this situation is. At that point, I'm silent. I don't ask anything. I'm just letting them prep me in every way possible they can for this surgery," Gianna added.
While the doctors took care of this situation and prepped Gianna for surgery, Ryan Blaney had yet to reach the hospital. When he eventually arrived, they shared a silent embrace before the baby's delivery.
"I'm looking to the side, and finally, I see Ryan come in the room, and he just comes to my head, and we're both silent, just holding each other. We're just waiting to hear a heartbeat and thank the Lord, or just waiting to hear a cry and thank the Lord," Gianna said.
The moments inside the operating room were tense, as the couple waited for any sign of life. They breathed a sigh of relief shortly after the baby was delivered and they heard its first cry.
"When he came out after a few seconds, you hear a cry, and that's all we wanted to hear. Then we both just lost it and bawled our eyes out because we were so frozen waiting for that moment because you don't know," she concluded.
Ryan Blaney's crew used code words to update on his wife's health
In the same interaction, Gianna also revealed that she and Ryan Blaney had established a code word system to share updates about her health. Given that Blaney travels around the country while competing in the 2025 Cup Series, he could not always be reached.
As a result, his crew used specific code words to give him updates about Gianna and the pregnancy.
"He got in the car again one of the race Sundays, and we had to have a code word for his crew chief and his spotter to tell him to give him the okay, that I'm okay in the hospital, because there was a time that he (baby) was unactive and they didn't like his heart rate."
So while the doctors assessed the situation and a potential C-section, Ryan Blaney had to be kept in the loop on the racetrack.
"So we had to give code words, which would give him peace of mind. Thankfully, I was always okay, and the baby was okay. But it was a lot. It was, 'the package was received' if I was okay, and then 'the package was home,' when I was home," Gianna concluded.
Their son, Charley Bennett Blaney, was born on November 17, 2025, which was right after the 2025 Cup Series finale. In that season, Blaney finished sixth in the driver standings, with four victories. He also ended the season with a win at Phoenix.
