SVG Returns to Trucks With Historic Goal in Sight at Watkins Glen

It is no secret that Shane van Gisbergen loves racing road courses and street circuits. After all, that is all he raced at and excelled at during his time in the Australian Supercars championship from 2007 to 2023.

Niece Motorsports recently announced that it would field SVG in the No. 4 Chevrolet Silverado for the Truck race at Watkins Glen on May 8. He will race alongside his Cup Series teammate Ross Chastain.

While the Kiwi driver has won races in the Cup and O'Reilly Series, a Truck win remains elusive. Shane van Gisbergen, who drives the No. 97 for Trackhouse Racing in the Cup Series, will become the 42nd driver to accomplish the feat of winning a race in all three series if he wins at Watkins Glen.

Niece Motorsports Team President and CEO Cody Efaw explained how the collaboration came together. "When we learned Shane had interests in running Truck Series races, it felt like a natural fit, said Efaw. "Our fab and body shop have put in a tremendous amount of work building new road course trucks."

Speaking about the Trackhouse duo, he said, "With Shane and Ross - both proven Cup Series road course winners - paired with Andres Perez de Lara, a talented road course racer in his own right, we like the strength of our lineup and expect to be in contention for the win."

It was Shane van Gisbergen's road course ability that made him a "clear priority" for Niece Motorsports.

SVG on his return to Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen is a track where Shane van Gisbergen has had ample success in his time in NASCAR. In two Cup Series starts at the track, he boasts a tight finish to 2nd in 2024 and a dominant 11-second victory in 2025.

"I’m really excited to have the opportunity to race for Niece Motorsports at Watkins Glen," said SVG on his return to the Truck Series. "I raced the truck once back in 2023 at IRP, and it was epic! Happy to be back at one of my favourite tracks. Hopefully we have a good crack at it…It’s going to be a lot of fun."

While many would find it difficult to jump from Cup to Truck and still be competitive, it is the track surface that makes SVG a firm favourite to win. The Trackhouse Racing star has 10 wins on road/street circuits across Cup and O'Reilly.

SVG will hope to bring a similar form to the Niece Motorsports truck in search of a bucket list win.
