Talladega Nights 2 story leaves NASCAR fans wanting more as director shares biggest what-if
Nearly two decades after Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby became one of NASCAR’s most iconic comedy films, the director revealed details about the sequel that never materialized. The unexpected details have now sparked a conversation among the fans.
The movie featuring Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby was released in 2006 and directed by Adam McKay. To mark the film’s 20th anniversary, the movie will be in theaters from June 28 to July 1.
In light of this, McKay sat down with Business Insider to discuss the movie. During this interview, he was asked whether there was ever a sequel in the works.
He revealed details about "Talladega Nights 2," which never happened, and that the storyline would revolve around Ricky Bobby becoming a Formula 1 driver.
"We did have an idea for "Talladega Nights." It was that Ricky Bobby was going to hook up with an F1 team, and he was going to race in Denmark or the Netherlands and feel like he's in a communist country because they have nationalized healthcare," McKay said. "So, along with struggling with how fast those F1 cars go, he would have clashed with far-left-leaning Europe compared to America."
However, he disclosed that the film never materialized purely because of "it's a lot of work to shoot race car stuff." Moreover, McKay further spoke about how they wanted to begin with the next film, "Step Brothers".
This revelation about a potential sequel to the NASCAR cult classic sent fans across the motorsports world into a frenzy.
Motorsports fans react to the "Talladega Nights 2" storyline that never happened
Under the post about the sequel shared by Variety on their X account, several fans gave their opinion about the "Talladega Nights 2" storyline that never moved beyond the idea stage.
One fan wrote, "The biggest ‘what if’ in history."
While another fan expressed their desire to have the sequel to this movie rather than the sequel to the Joseph Kosinski-directed 'F1:The Movie'. They wrote,
"Can we do this instead of a sequel to the F1 movie?"
Another expressed that the F1 storyline would have brought out more excitement among viewers, writing:
"The F1 culture clash premise would have been fun to see play out."
Yet another fan joked about how fun it would be to see Ricky Bobby race alongside Max Verstappen. They wrote:
"Ricky Bobby next to Max Verstappen would feed families."
Another fan humorously begged for the scrapped idea to come to life as they wrote:
"That sounds like the exact kind of chaotic energy that made the original so quotable. Ricky Bobby trying to navigate socialized healthcare and high-downforce aerodynamics would’ve been comedic gold. A total missed opportunity, but "Step Brothers" was a fair trade-off!"
What do you think about the scrapped sequel storyline? Let us know in the comments.
