23-year-old Ty Gibbs scored his first NASCAR Cup Series win at Bristol Speedway on Sunday in his fourth year as a full-time driver. Being the Grandson of JGR owner Joe Gibbs and son of the late Coy Gibbs, pressure has always been high on Tyler.

In a post-race interview, his mother, Heather Gibbs, shared what this moment means to the whole team and their family. Gibbs led the final 25 laps of the Food City 500, including a risky strategic decision not to pit during a late caution.

While Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson dominated the race, leading a combined 474 laps, they pitted wth 20 to go, which cost them the lead and eventually gave Ty Gibbs his first win. Speaking about the emotional triumph, his mother, Heather, said:

"I think that's what means more to me, there are people at Joe Gibbs Racing that are lifers, that believed with us when it was tough, that cried with us. And we walked through tough times, and every organization does. But to me, I think the win is theirs."

The most intense moment came during the final caution on lap 498 of 500 that sent the race into overtime. Heather admitted that she has a physical reaction to the stress and was constantly messaging her other children as the laps wound down.

She explained, "My downfall is, I hold my breath. So I'm texting with my daughter, Elle, and my son, Jet, and Case. And Elle's like, 'Oh, we're done. We're done.' And I'm like, I just text her, I'm like, 'God's got it.'"

Ty Gibbs on Ignoring "False Things" and Finding Validation

This win carries extra weight for Ty Gibbs due to the drama surrounding Joe Gibbs Racing over the last year. Things got very ugly in the legal dispute with former competition director Chris Gabehart, bringing internal tensions to light, including claims that the No. 54 team received special treatment because of family ties.

Gabehart alleged that the Gibbs family undermined his efforts and that coaching decisions were clouded by Joe Gibbs acting more like a grandfather than a team owner. After a difficult 2025 season where a mid-year crew chief swap failed to produce a victory, this win finally provides a clear answer to those critics.

"People can say what they want, can say false things … I'm not big on social media. I just love racing cars," Ty Gibbs said to the media after the win.

His crew chief, Tyler Allenas quite emotional by the victory himself, said, "Yeah, I think Ty needed this. We both needed this. We're a team. We both needed this confidence boost. I've been saying forever, when he gets one, he's going to get a lot."

For a team that has faced accusations of favoritism and internal struggle, Ty Gibbs' Bristol trophy serves as the ultimate validation.
