Watkins Glen Race Gets Shifted on NASCAR 2027 Calendar
NASCAR is peeking at the 2024 calendar to shape the Watkins Glen race schedule next year. After the May experiment they're doing this year, the Glen race will go back to September in 2027.
With that, Watkins Glen will once again be a part of the Chase races like it was in 2024. Though the dates are yet to be revealed, the announcement was made by Watkins Glen track president Dawn Burlew during a fan event at Glenora Wine Cellars.
“People actually really liked that recognition for The Glen as well as all our fans that come here,” Burlew said Thursday from a lakeside vista at Glenora Wine Cellars.
“So being in [The Chase] going forward, I think they’re going to be thrilled that we’re at the first part of that and really kind of set the stage for the rest of the playoff season. So again, if we can be part of that and kick it off, there’s no better place than to do it at The Glen,” he added.

Since its debut in 1957, the Watkins Glen race has always been scheduled for the latter half of the race season, typically August. However, this year the race was scheduled early in May to create an even distribution of road courses on the calendar. Nonetheless, moving the race in September will also do the same.
Shane Van Gibergen gears up for triple duty at Watkins Glen
The #97 Trackhouse Racing driver is known for his success at the road course. But it will be his first time racing at Watkins Glen in the Craftsman Truck Series.
SVG will be driving for Niece Motorsports alongside his Trackhouse teammate Ross Chastain. While his other teammate, Conor Zilisch, will race for Spire Motorsports.
On Saturday, he will be back racing for JR Motorsports in the O’Reilly series. Talking about the track temperature for the O’Reilly Series, the driver said, "So, the cooler temps will help with that. But I don’t know the climate there, how much cooler it will be. But I think it will affect all classes, even the O’Reilly Series, the tires blister and get pretty hot there, the left rear. So, it will probably be the same for them too.”
Watkins Glen was one of the five road courses Shane Van Gisbergen won last year. But this season, the way the in-form Tyler Reddick has risen to beat him at COTA, it'll be interesting to see who takes the checkered flag this time.
