'Way Too Toxic': Kevin Harvick Reacts To Kyle Busch and Jim Pohlman's Relationship
Just one day after the Jack Link's 500, Richard Childress Racing has swapped out Kyle Busch's crew chief for the third time in seven months. And veteran Kevin Harvick isn't happy.
"Kyle Busch has been good-let alone great -but good," Harvick said in the recent Happy Hour podcast. "His crew chief has always been good at, um, think about the Adam Stevens, mild-mannered guy for many years was with him more. But here, when I hear the crew chief talk about me like that, he has zero confidence in anything that I'm doing in the car."
Stevens and Busch stayed together for six years, winning two championships and 28 races along the way. However, since then, it's been tough for Rowdy.
Notably, Harvick's statement comes amid a challenging relationship between Busch and his former crew chief, Jim Pohlman. At Bristol, Pohlman and Busch had a tense exchange on the radio. And that was part of the reason why Harvick added:
"And that p***** me off if I'm the driver. I mean, if you're going to talk about me like that, I don't care if I can't hear you or not. And heat of the moment? No, that's what you mean. And you know, I just after that, I was like, there is no way that this will possibly work because this is way too toxic."
Busch has been winless for the last two and a half seasons and is currently going through a 103-race winless streak, something very surprising for a two-time Cup Series champion. Looking back at it, RCR is trying everything they can to make him win races.
RCR owner explains Kyle Busch's crew chief change
RCR Chairman Richard Childress explained the decision to replace Jim Pohlman with Andy Street.
"This move is about putting our people in the best position to succeed. We have strong talent across this organization, and we’re focused on having each person in the right position to help deliver the results we expect.”
With Pohlman, Busch was able to grab only one top 10 so far into the season. Richard Childress' team moved him into a different role within RCR and brought back Andy Street, who has race-winning experience in NASCAR with drivers like Kaz Grala, Myatt Snider, and Anthony Alfredo.
