Layne Riggs can easily be said to be Ford's top young prospect in NASCAR. But the young driver is not making the mistake of getting lost in such a claim and rushing his climb to the Cup Series.

On the topic of his future, Riggs pointed out that it would be better to wait for the right time than risk a premature jump and lose it all. In doing so, he also drew reference to Connor Zilisch's failure to perform at the Cup level in 2026 despite dominating the O'Reilly Series in 2025.

Explaining his approach during a media availability earlier this week, Riggs told Bob Pockrass:

“Yeah, I don't have any specific set goals or win counts or a championship I have to get (before getting to Cup). I just feel like once I'm comfortable enough to know, like, I can jump up in this other series and be good right off the rip.”

He then continued by explaining just how difficult the transition to Cup racing can be for any driver.

“And that's tough for anybody in the Cup Series. There's no other car like that to learn from. You have to race Cup to learn how to run a Cup car. And you look at, you know, the tough start that Connor Zilisch had this year, and every driver that starts in the Cup Series, their rookie year is usually pretty rough. I think waiting for the right opportunity comes when the time is right,” he added.

Concluding, Riggs emphasized why patience is more important than haste when it comes to career goals. Even though the young driver is modest in his approach, his results speak louder than his measured words.

Layne Riggs Is Backing Up His Words With Results

Riggs' cautious approach must be understood through how the driver has been making waves in his NASCAR Truck Series career. Through the opening 12 races of 2026, the Front Row Motorsports driver has already collected three victories at St. Petersburg, Charlotte, and Nashville while establishing himself as a championship favorite.

The prodigy is also the leader of the standings as he has amassed a massive 497 points with a compilation of three wins, six top-five finishes, seven top-10s, and one pole. Even more notable is his consistency, where he has led around 200 laps.

His impressive resume was further bolstered by the fact that he won back-to-back races at Charlotte and Nashville. If we all remember his dramatic finish at Nashville, we would also remember the dramatic last-lap lunge pass he made on Rajah Caruth.

The young driver stood fifth in the 2025 championship standings. But roughly halfway through the 2026 season, he has already bettered that by moving to the top. The 23-year-old has a bright future in NASCAR ahead, one that he himself is too careful to jinx.
