Why Carson Hocevar Was Upset After Dover Caution Sequence
Sunday's NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover was far from being caution-free. One of those cautions caught Carson Hocevar off guard and messed up his race strategy, leading to a frustrated radio message.
On lap 136, the No. 77 Spire Motorsports driver was running in fifth place and drove into the pits for a quick stop as part of his undercut strategy. However, that call backfired as a few laps later, Joey Logano crashed at Turns 1 and 2, bringing out the caution.
Hocevar was now at a disadvantage. Instead of cycling back to the front of the pack, he was stuck at the rear and two laps down as the leaders were yet to pit. This resulted in Hocevar blowing up over the radio.
He said, "Now I’m gonna have to pass them for the sixth time, eventually these f****** yahoos that are no driving f**** will figure it out."
The 23-year-old was having a tough race from the get-go. In the first stage, with 14 of 75 laps remaining, he suffered a flat front-right tire, resulting in him hitting the wall at Turn 3. Fortunately, the Spire Motorsports team managed to keep him in the race.
However, Logano's crash meant Carson Hocevar went from being in contention for a potential Top five finish to 14th place and a lap down.
Up next is the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24, and Hocevar might have bigger plans to attempt The Double in the future.
Carson Hocevar Opens Up About The Possibility of Attempting Double Duty
Carson Hocevar was spotted at the three-day Indy 500 practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway early last week. He attended the sessions as a guest of Andretti Global, which is a sister team of Spire Motorsports.
During an interview with Frontstretch, when Hocevar was questioned if he would attempt The Indy 500-Coca-Cola 600 Double if given a chance, he replied:
"I would love to do it. We always laugh at, joke that I’m, especially on our dirt team - I’m marketing and merchandising. My title isn't anything other than marketing and merchandising."
He further added, "I happen to drive, but on Monday through Friday, marketing merchandize. So all the marketing merchandising of me in our offices department say this is great. But the race fan and race car driver purist would love to do this one day."
If Carson Hocevar were to attempt the double next year, he would become the seventh driver to do so. From the active NASCAR grid, Kyle Larson attempted double duty for two years in a row (2024 and 2025) but failed to conquer the 1100-mile challenge.
This year, Katherine Legge is all set to attempt it - racing with AJ Foyt Racing/HMD Motorsports at Indy and with Live Fast Motorsports in Charlotte.
